How do I digitize VHS with a Sony Handycam?
I’m trying to digitize some old VHS tapes. I’ve looked around and tried a couple things, but no luck as yet.
I’m trying to use my Sony Handycam DCR-SX40 and my laptop to accomplish this task, in addition to a working VCR and VHS tapes. I’ve tried using the composite/AV cables that came with the camcorder. I plug them into the back of the VCR in the output plugs, and then connect it to the camcorder in the appropriate spot. I push play on the VCR and I can see the footage on the television screen, but it is not showing up on the camcorder in any way. I’ve also tried connecting the camcorder (while its connected in this manner to the VCR) to the laptop through a USB cable — tried to use VLC media player to see if I could get any video running, but no luck.
Does anyone know how I can — on my own — digitize my old VHS tapes using my Sony Handycam and/or laptop?

Forget your camcorder – it’s not going to help. You need an analog to digital converter to convert your VCR output into something your PC can use. The Pinnacle Dazzle is a popular choice but any electronics store and many supermarkets can sell you a suitable device for much less. Look for phrases like "VHS to DVD".
