HOw can I successfully change my VHS collection to DVDs?
I have about 500 VHS tapes. When my VCR died I was out of luck. I started buying DVDs to play in the PS2, but in the future I want to make sure that I can always watch my other videos as well. I am in the market for a DVD-R/VHS combo, but have heard that they all have built in devices to avoid reproducing copyrighted material. I have also heard that VHS tapes didn’t include this data until recently. Lots of my tapes are over 10 years old. Do you know when they started including this data on VHS tapes, and do you know of anyway that I can copy the other tapes onto DVD for my own personal home library? Also, any reccomendations on what type of DVD-r/VHS combo I should buy? Thanks… not trying to make money here, just trying to convert.

Certain electronics stores will transfer VHS tapes to DVD’s, but it will cost about $10, so only do this for personal VHS tapes (assuming you don’t have like 20 of them).
Keep in mind that when transferring VHS tapes to DVD, the quality will remain that of a VHS tape, meaning that it would be redundant to get DVD’s that are essentially VHS quality. The whole appeal behind upgrading to a DVD was for sharper picture and sound. Not only that, but the ability to skip through certain parts of a film via "chapter selections" was also the appeal of a DVD. You can create new menus and chop the films up into chapters on your own when working with a VHS transfer, but the process is more time-consuming and less efficient.
Not only that, but DVD’s are soon going to be extinct once Blu-ray takes over! So it’s pointless to think about converting everything to DVD when in about 7-8 years, you’ll have 500 DVD’s that you may think about converting to Blu-ray. So I honestly think that you simply buy another VCR for about $30.
I would also like to know this information when you get it. Thanks
I am able with my dvd recorder to transfer vhs tapes (copyrighted or not) to dvd. It does, however, detect copyrights on dvd’s and does not allow me to copy them. My dvd recorder is a not a dual dvd/vcr; i have a separate dual dvd/vcr connected. My dvd recorder is a panasonic, 2 yrs old this christmas. It’s been awesome!!
