Can the Roku Digital Video Player play content from the LAN?
At present I use a first generation modified Xbox to stream media from a shared folder on a PC on my LAN via Xbox Media Center.
I am looking to buy something that streams Netflix such as Roku but I wish be able to continue playing videos on my LAN – stored on a hard drive inside of a desktop PC.

Yes
You "subscribe" to a media server channel on your Roku and then stream content from your PC over your wireless or wired network. I use a free one called Gabby but there are others; some free, some not. This method works with all of the models all the way back to the SD. The new XD|S simply adds an onboard USB port to the mix.
Netflix isn’t all the Roku will stream. For an idea of the many "private channels", look here —> http://www.roku-channels.com/home
