Why does my memorex DVD player have 2 grey vertical lines going down the side of my tv?
It plays the movies it just has 2 grey vertical lines. How do you fix it?
It sounds like you may have made the mistake of buying “Full Screen” DVDs. I assume your TV is 16:9 aspect ratio. If you have bought the Full Screen DVD you will have black or gray bars on each side of the picture. Check the DVD cover and see if it says “Full Screen”. If so return the disc to the store and exchange it for “Wide Screen”.
Sometimes marketing uses misleading names to make something bad sound like something good. The term “Full Screen” seems to imply that you are getting the full picture but in the case of a 2.4:1 movie you are getting only about half the picture. Always buy the wide screen version of the disc. In most cases the disc should then be in the original format of the movie. Because a lot of movies are 2.35 or 2.4:1 you will now get black or gray bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is ok because you are at least not losing any picture. You are losing screen because your screen is not shaped like the picture. It’s better to lose some screen than to lose some picture. At least you are not missing any information this way.
You can get rid of all the black or gray bars by installing a CIH (constant image height) projection system. This can not be done with any TV because with the TV the screen shape is fixed. With the CIH projection system the screen can be adjusted to fit any format.
